Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does. William James
For over a year now, your donations, purchases, and assistance at 2nd Chance Thrift Shop have supported the care and adoption of animals at the Upland Animal Shelter who need their second chance. However, the shop's continued success is critical now more than ever since Friends began operating the shelter in partnership with the City's Animal Control Officers in May of this year.
Another one is going home!
In case you haven’t visited yet, 2nd Chance is not your average thrift shop. Yes, we offer gently used furniture, household and garden goods, wall art, books, pet supplies, clothing, shoes, purses, jewelry, and more at great prices. But, we are amazed at the consistently high-quality donations we receive and can offer to our customers.
Just yesterday, another new customer was marveling at the variety and quality of the merchandise and said, “I can’t believe how clean the store is and how much great stuff you have…and it helps the animals? Even better.” We agree.
A generous donation of new (wrapped) and
gently-used games just in time for the holidays.
Behind the scenes, our stock room is typically overflowing with items that need to be cleaned, priced, and put on the sale floor. We are incredibly thankful for everyone’s generosity. At times, it seems overwhelming, but then we just work harder and faster to get new items out on the sales floor.
The stock room…or, as we like to call it, “controlled chaos”
defined as "a state, or situation, which appears to be
completely disorganized, but is actually under control…”
Because we put new items on the sales floor every day, you never know what you are going to find when you visit. That’s what makes it so fun. Here are a few recent photos from around the shop.
Who remembers the Star Child and platform shoes?
He's in one of our vintage display cases.
The furniture corner…we have a constantly
changing selection of furniture.
The animal corner…we always have cute, funny,
and beautiful animal figurines.
The “grab bag” racks...bundles of miscellaneous items and supplies…
a recent addition that is very popular.
We have great prices all the time. But, every month, merchandise that has been in the shop for a while goes on clearance. For example, November is our “Green Tag” sale month. All items marked with a green price sticker are 50% off. You’ll see signs in the store that let you know what sticker color is on sale.
This month, we are launching a new promotion to further entice everyone to consider clearance items. Clearance items will continue to be 50% off during the first two weeks of each month, but then will be further reduced to 75% off the second half of the month. So, starting on November 15 until the end of the month, all green tag items will be 75% off.
Right now, we are also getting ready for the holidays. We’ve started putting holiday decorations out. If you are looking for greenery, wreaths, lights, and outdoor décor, it’s on the floor now. (Thanksgiving items are already out…serving ware, cookbooks, tablecloths, dining tables, etc.).

On the day after Thanksgiving (i.e., Black Friday), we will be bringing items out of long-term storage and opening our “Holiday Shoppe.” One of our front rooms that usually has antiques and collectibles in it will be transformed into a holiday boutique with decorated trees, ornaments, and collectibles. Plus, we’ll have our usual “seasonal wall” with a variety of merchandise as well as great gifts throughout the store.

What is that? It's a Major Award!
As you can see, there's a lot going on. We hope you'll visit soon to see all we have to offer. We also invite you to stop by anytime on December 21 for cookies and hot chocolate. We'd like to celebrate the season with you and thank everyone who has shopped, donated, and volunteered at 2nd Chance for making a real difference in the lives of animals at the shelter.
