Veterinary Technician Job Description
Organization Information: Friends of Upland Animal Shelter (Friends) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that is partnered with the City of Upland to perform shelter operations and adoptions. Upland Animal Shelter is an open admission animal shelter for stray animals found in Upland. Friends operates the shelter with a "no kill" philosophy (maintaining a live release rate over 90%), accepts owner surrendered animals on a case-by-case basis and acts as a "rescue" by transferring in animals from other shelters and rescues. Friends works with a network of community partners, business sponsors, adopters, donors and volunteers with our mission being to find a loving home for every adoptable animal.
Pay Range: Hourly, based on experience, starting at $18.00 per hour. Medical, dental, and vision insurance available.
Reports to: Shelter Operations Manager
Job Summary:
Under direct supervision of the Shelter Operations Manager & Advising Medical Vet or Medical Services, cares for the animals under the care of Friends of Upland Animal Shelter. Assists with treatment and coordination of treatment of all animals and maintains medical and facility inventory.
Job Purpose:
To perform all duties related to caring for animals; assess the health and behavior of animals; clean and disinfect work station/medical room; maintain medical records in Chameleon; provide the staff with insight of medical issues; caring for all animals related to duties as assigned.

Minimum Experience and Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Two (2) years of experience working as a veterinary technician in an animal shelter, veterinary hospital or other animal care facility. Two (2) years of experience working with domestic animals in an animal shelter, veterinary hospital or other animal care facility is preferred. One (1) year supervisory experience is preferred. Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus.
May be required to pass background check, physical examination, and drug screening.
Must maintain a California Class C driver’s license with a good driving record.
Education:
High School Graduate or GED
Veterinary Technician’s Certification or Related more advanced veterinary certification or license
Language Ability:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Math Ability:
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently required to lift, restrain, vaccinate and move animals and other items weighing up to 70 pounds.
