This year's Dogtoberfest mascot is Hayden. More than a year ago, this sweet boy came to us as a stray, with no one to call his own. Thanks to our advocacy and extended care programs , Hayden is getting the time, support, and second chance he needs to find his forever home.

Adoption Begins Long Before They Leave the Shelter

What happens between the day a frightened animal arrives at the shelter and the day they walk out of the door with their new family? A lot.

A scared dog may need time and training to learn to trust again. A vulnerable kitten may need foster care to grow strong enough for adoption. An animal with medical needs may need treatment and extended care. Some pets come to us through transfers from other shelters, giving them a second chance when they might otherwise have nowhere to go. And through advocacy and community programs like TNR, we work to help animals both inside and outside our shelter.

These are the behind-the-scenes lifesaving programs that make adoption possible. And these are the programs that make it possible for us to maintain a "no-kill" philosophy.

This fall, Dogtoberfest: Unleashing Hope, is shining a light on the journey that transforms shelter pets from frightened, vulnerable or overlooked animals into healthy, confident companions ready for loving homes.

From Advocacy and Extended Care to Training, TNR, Foster Care and Transfers, it takes a lot of resources including food, supplies, training, transportation, and daily care.  Dogtoberfest supports all of these critical programs.

Because adoption doesn't begin when someone walks into the shelter looking for a pet. It begins long before that moment, with the care, patience and programs that help an animal become ready for a second chance.
